Hey friends, let’s talk about Harassment & Stalking! 👋🏻🗣
Many of you are aware it has been a constant in my life for the past 2-3 years.
Countless times I’ve had my photos, identity, & personal details given out by strangers on the internet. Some of you may be thinking hey Georgia why don’t you make your profile more private? You see they are. All social media is as private as it can get. Including my business page containing minimal details about myself, yet it doesn’t stop.
Recently I had trialled changing my profile pictures to a plain background colour of yellow, despite many asking what awareness I was supporting I was actually just trying to protect myself from online & offline predators.
This experiment lasted a few months and as of Monday 6th I’ve changed my profile back to a picture of myself. 2 days is all it took until the constant messages on fb, adds by people I don’t know, Instagram follow requests, LinkedIn notifications & WhatsApp messages from men claiming they’ve been talking to me on the internet and that we are in love.
Knowing this isn’t the first time this has happened I react accordingly. Block, report, occasionally attempt to find the source of who’s doing this, go to the police etc.
But why should I have to keep going through this?
Being a female I have always been scared walking in public places, catching public transport in the dark, going to my car after a night out with friends or being wolf whistled in the street. These are all things women shouldn’t have to worry about yet it’s our reality in this day and age.
Before you take someone’s identity and pretend to be them online, ask yourself if they deserve it or whether you deserve more in life.
Stop putting people through the misery of always feeling watched & being harassed. It is not ok. Never has been, never was.
I’m sharing my side of the story on these issues and I hope this helps others in realising they have not done anything wrong by being online and present on social media. Photos of mine stolen are your basic everyday pic being exploited for others gain. It doesn’t matter how private you are there’s always someone behind a screen trying to get bring you down.
